Verzetsmuseum 04/27/2025
Today was our last full day in Amsterdam. Tomorrow we will travel to Brugge, Belgium. Our plans today were to visit the Resistance Museum and end the day with a wine and cheese canal tour of the historic part of Amsterdam.
The Dutch Resistance Museum is considered to be the best historical museum in the Netherlands. It tells the story of the Dutch people while they were under German occupation May 14, 1940 to May 5, 1945. The museum uses old posters, videos, relics, and personal interviews to recreate the atmosphere of the streets in that time. The sights and sounds provide the museum visitors with a window view of history. The museum was structured in chronological order providing a time line from beginning to end. The building that houses the museum was built in 1876. It served as a Jewish synagogue and cultural center for many decades. The building bears the Star of David. There were a lot of mixed emotions among the populace as to which side of the fence they were on. I thought the museum presented both sides, but it concentrated on the activities of the Resistance activities.
We have enjoyed our time in Amsterdam. We were able to see and vist most of the items on our to do list (not everything). If your travels bring you here I recomend you visit this museum and take the canal ride. The museum was educational from a historical perspective and gives a better understanding of life in the Netherlands than we get at home.
